
Another bit of writing from last year was this review of Jonathan Yeo’s exhibition Skin Deep at the Bowes Museum, County Durham. Yeo is a British artist with a long-held interest in ideas of bodily perfection and their shaping by new technologies.
Since 2008, Yeo’s Aesthetic Surgery series has documented his collaboration with surgeons conducting elective surgery, primarily for cosmetic purposes. His exhibition Jonathan Yeo: Skin Deep at County Durham’s impressive Bowes Museum focuses on the faces and breasts of fair-skinned women, apparently reflecting the major clientele of UK cosmetic surgeons. As Yeo notes in a useful and attractive catalogue book, this highlights the fact that it is mostly women who choose to go under the surgeon’s knife—or at least who submit to having the process documented.
